On a busy street in Da Nang, one of the fastest growing cities in Vietnam, stands an unassuming cafe with a big mission. Walk through its open gates and you will be welcomed into the Tipi community: home of collaborative, conversation-based English learning. This film follows the generations of those who have built Tipi Cafe and grown together from its humble foundations. "Between Two Piers" explores Brighton's seafront busking scene. The film uses observational and participatory filmmaking to delve into the unique atmosphere that inspires spontaneous musical invention in this distinctive environment. But does the act of capturing these ephemeral performances disrupt the magic? The presence of a camera brings risk - Is it worth it, in order to connect with audiences online and enhance the music? This project, born from my Ethnomusicology MA dissertation, aims to answer these questions. I hope you enjoy. The Cascade project reworks cassette tape recordings from my personal archive - of old songs and conversations - into live improvised soundscapes. This film follows Paddy, an inventor with a dream to create musical instruments that anybody can use. He is designing the 'Robot Choir' for his friend, Stephen, who has cerebral palsy. Injecting his playful personality into his creations, Paddy hopes to open previously closed doors for people with physical disablities to be creative.
