Composing with Tape: Dyski Residency

Project type

Video

Location

Cornwall, UK

Date

April 2025

Role

Filmmaker

In April, I had the privilege of attending a workshop residency in Cornwall. Titled 'Composing with Tape', I and several others spent the week working with reel-to-reel tape machines, under the guidance of Paul Cousins. The residency was a part of Dion Star's Dyski series, one of several Dion runs throughout the year

Dyski means 'to learn or to teach' in Cornish, indicating the often permeable nature of these two verbs. This week was, for me, an excellent taster of working with 1/4" tape, situated in the very enchanting Rosemerryn House, near Lamorna Cove and the Merry Maidens stone circle.

This picturesque part of Cornwall, has long been a draw for generations of artists, and it was not hard to see why, with its ever changing light, filtered through lush green ferns, bluebells and wild garlic. This video documents collaborative sound sculpture project that our group created on the final day.

I was incredibly fortunate to attend this workshop with a grant from the Dyski project, which made it possible for me to attend - very many thanks to Dion and the team for this opportunity.
