48 Hour Film Project: The Second Fisherman

This was my first time working on a 48 Hour Film Project — an annual challenge where teams are given a genre, a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue, and just 48 hours to write, shoot, and edit a film. It was great to collab with Blue Light Films, and join forces with Jamie Rye Potter on our two-person sound team. We took the 48-hour limit seriously — every sound in the film was recorded from scratch, no pre-recorded effects or music.

The first day was spent on set in the middle of a June heatwave, capturing all the location sounds, using the MixPre 10 again. Having two of us working sound meant that I was able to give my full attention to mixing live on the MixPre 10, which made our jobs in post the next day that bit easier! That evening, we jammed out some music — aiming for something lonesome and yearning, reflecting the relationship between the two leads and the maritime setting. We went with accordion and saxophone, drawing sonic inspiration from Walt McClement’s On a Painted Ocean.

The next day, we put it all together, working closely with director Lore Reeves, 1st AD Mariana Morais and editor Vincent Sperandio to get all the sound elements edited and mixed just right.

We were all super happy with the result, a quirky mystery-drama with multiple characters and locations, with a bespoke score and theme locking in the emotion and atmosphere. The film scooped 'Best Director' at the award's ceremony - go Lore!
